At the end of March my challenge of a drawing a day came to an end. What initially would take 30 days, became at the end a 365 days journey. In any case, it has resulted in a whole stack of sketchbooks filled with drawings.
Fortunately, I can say that this challenge has brought me a lot. There was a learning curve and when I look back at the first drawings compared to the later ones , I see a clear difference. What I also noticed is that I ended up putting more time into the daily drawings at the end. You know where you want to go, and in my opinion a good drawing simply takes time. I hope, one day, to master the skills where I can put something fantastic on paper in a very short time. Although I must also say that of course it is not about the result but about the way to get there. Drawing is fun, a wonderful thing which, with a little diligence, can also produce beautiful results.
What do I take with me.
First of all, of course, the strange times around COVID-19 always stick to this challenge. I will always view my sketchbooks of that time with that strange times in mind. I also learned a lot about paper. Not every paper is the same and unfortunately you cannot achieve certain results on some types of paper. In addition, black is not always black with graphite on paper. Graphite is gray and even when you draw with very soft pencils you will never get to the deep black. Charcoal, in contrast to graphite, is beautiful black, but smaller details are more difficult, especially on the A5 size paper that I used. But what I have learned is that the value between light and dark in the contrast you create in your drawing without contrast in value is counterproductive.
For now there is time again to focus on other art forms. But the experience and knowledge gained will certainly help me with this. It was a great experience and fun to do.
