Sint Antoniesluis is a historic lock located in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The lock was built in the 17th century and it is named after Saint Anthony, the patron saint of grocers. The sluice gate was used to regulate the water level of the Amstel River, which is one of the main waterways in Amsterdam.

The Stopera is located in the center of Amsterdam, between the Waterlooplein, the Amstel and the Zwanenburgwal. The building stands on the Vlooienburg peninsula, which was filled in in the sixteenth century.

The Amstel the river that flows trough Amsterdam, is since the birth of the city an ever lasting companion.

Early in the morning, when there is fog above the IJ, Amsterdam feels at its narrowest.

Since 1883, the Blauwbrug has connected Amstelstraat with Waterlooplein, spanning the Amstel. The name Blauwbrug comes from the nickname of the old bridge that was there before 1883 and had blue railings. Today only the lanterns on the bridge are blue in color.

The life-size chessboard on the Max Euweplein has become a well-known concept of the square where many games and even tournaments are played.

I had already painted this location in oil paint with the old yellow trams from the eighties of the last century. Now with the more modern version from this century.

Under the smoke of Amsterdam lies this old village, where time seems to have stood still.

The Westertoren has often been the subject of Amsterdam folk songs and is even mentioned by Anne Frank's in here diary.

Mint tower; The name of the tower refers to the fact that the guard house on side of it was used to mint coins in the 17th Century.

On a rainy day I passed the Damrak in Amsterdam. The oncoming tram drew a trail of light ahead of it on the wet road and the rails.

Late in the evening a beautiful orange glow appeared on the horizon. Painted plein air with a headlamp on as darkness fell.

Watercolor of our Cityhall and opera/ballet theater. Locally it’s called the Stopera what literally means “stop the opera”. This is a reminder from the time people where against the build of the building. 

Crossing de river Amstel there’s the Magere brug. Because the first bridge on this site was very narrow, the locals called it magere brug, which literally means "skinny bridge".

Getting your parked bicycle back between the other bicycles is not always easy in Amsterdam. This painting has been given a spot on the September page of the new painting group calendar 2023.

Oosterdok. A place in Amsterdam with a long naval history. 

Plein air painted along the river Ee in Friesland near Bartlehiem. With a bit of luck people skate here in the winter, now they sail alongside.

During the Elfstedentocht, this bridge is the scene of a true folk festival. Now a scenic place to paint this bridge plein air in watercolor.

De Sluyswacht, today a café, was built in 1695 as a lockkeeper's house on the St.Anthoniesluis. The lock itself was built in 1602 to replace a dam between the Oude Schans and the Zwanenburgwal, the eastern defense waters of the old city centre. The locks served a dual purpose: to prevent enemy ships from entering the city and to regulate the outflow of river water from the Amstel via the canals to the Zuiderzee estuary, the IJ. They still fulfill the latter function: in this way the water in the canals is regularly refreshed.

Light and sound reflect in the underpass of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

The hot smoking process has given them a golden shine.

For now the wind is with us, which means driving against the Dutch mountains the way back.

During a short break on Ameland, the beach breathes tranquility despite the rough elements. In the distance the signs of a heavy autumn shower.
