Jumbo pencils
When I draw I like that the tip of my pencils is sharp and long. In my opinion, this makes the use more versatile. In particular, the side of the graphite core can be used. Now I started drawing with harder pencils over time. And harder pencils have a thinner core than the softer ones. Now I usually sharpen graphite pencils with a two-stage sharpener (KUM), but even then it was not quite to my liking. That is why I tried the full graphite versions but that wasn’t a match for me. These do not feel comfortable in the hand, feel too slippery and often my hand is grey from the graphite. Now I am a big fan of the Faber Castel 9000 pencils and a while ago I came across the Jumbo variant.
I think the number of hardnesses is limited, but what immediately stood out was that there is a super point and core in these pencils. I must confess that the Jumbo pencils quickly became my favorites. But because a sharp point is still important and how to sharpen it aswell. This only requires a sharpener who knows how to handle this thickness.
Now I have a sharpener from M+R that gives fine points on the Jumbo pencils. Only I noticed that it results in a much shorter point compared to the pencils that where factory new. Apparently the angle of sharpening is less sharp than the angle at which they are sharpened in the factory.
Now I have a wide collection of sharpeners at home, including some from Faber Castel. So I tried them and indeed those models sharpen a much sharper point than the M + R sharpener. But I had the idea that the wood of the pencil was not nicely removed. The blades maybe no longer sharp, so look for a new one because, as it seems, the blades are unfortunately not replaceable.
Faber Castel has for the line in with the 9000 series are a beautiful sharpener with a double sharpening possibility. 21 degrees for normal pencils and 24 degrees for the Jumbo variants. So that had to be him. Unfortunately, I soon had to conclude that this sharpener delivers the same result as the other models I had at home. Fine points but no tightly cut wood. In addition, the sharps accumulate in the sharpener and if you work too enthusiastically, the sharpener will open automatically and your workplace will be under the mess. Unfortunately not the solution this new sharpener.
The coarse wood finish.
Jammed wood schavings.
Piled up and jammed under the plastic trim.
These pencils in Jumbo version are ideal for me, but only sharpened at the right angle. Now I have a pencil grinder somewhere that I once bought for a few euros and never actually use. And as it turns out, these sharpen beautiful points on the Jumbo pencils. Solved the problem and draw with these super graphite pencils.
Update july 6 2020:
To make sure I used the right sharpener I asked Faber Castell the question via email. Neatly in English but Faber-Castell's head office has passed it on to the importer of my country for rather unclear reasons. Apparently not worth answering such a silly question. The importer indicated that the Faber Castell pencil sharpener Grip Trio is suitable for the Jumbo Graphite pencils. Unfortunately, we had already tested it and this too gives a too short point because it does not grind at the right angle.
